ZnKelp: innovation in pecan trees’ nutrition

ZnKelp: A partner for the success of pecan trees.
One of Mexico’s most emblematic crops, the pecan tree, faces constant challenges regarding plant nutrition; zinc application being the most challenging one. This micronutrient is essential for guaranteeing ideal plant development, blooming quality and fruit filling. To meet these challenges, Algas Pacific, leader in sustainable agricultural solutions, presents ZnKelp, a complex fertilizer designed to maximize efficiency in zinc application and uptake via the radicular system.

¿What is ZnKelp?

It is a nutritional fertilizer made of mineral zinc and chelating agents extracted from seaweeds. It is an organo-mineral complex with high assimilation that achieves zinc uptake via the radicular system in crops such as the pecan tree. ZnKelp ensures the uptake, translocation and assimilation of zinc which constitutes a key element for a successful increase in yield and fruit quality. ZnKelp’s formula allows the roots to effectively uptake zinc and translocate it up to foliage.

Notable benefits of ZnKelp:

  • Easy application via irrigation: it does not depend on weather, specialized equipment or additional personel.
  • Optimizes zinc uptake and assimilation: takes the micronutrient from the roots up to the tree´s tallest foliage.
  • Reduction of operating cost: this thanks to its compability with existent irrigation system.
  • Ideal fruit quality: achieving yield similar or superior to that from traditional methods of foliage application.
Fiel results

In Sonora, in three crop cycles, ZnKelp showed outstanding results. During the first treatment cycle via irrigation, the zinc concentration in foliage reached levels from 50 to 60ppm increasing up to 90ppm in the second and third cycle. In addition, the pecan trees treated did not show common deficiencies such as chlorosis, yellowing or abnormal sprout development. The yield analysis also exhibited significant improvements:

  • Higher fresh weight of foliage in comparison with the control plot area.
  • Quality fruit and better nitrogen and starch reserves in treated trees.

ZnKelp not only improves productivity, but also optimizes farmers’ operating costs. Since ZnKelp is included within the usual irrigation, additional costs associated with foliage applications are non-existent which equals to a sustainable solution both in economic and environmental terms.
